Habits That Actually Stick

Habits That Actually Stick

Most habits fail not from weak willpower but from a plan the brain can't sustain — here's what tends to make them last.

Start absurdly small

A version so small it feels almost too easy is the one that survives a busy week. Two minutes you'll actually do beats thirty you'll skip.

Anchor to what you already do

Attach the new habit to an existing one — after the morning coffee, before you open the laptop — so an established routine carries it. The anchor does the remembering for you.

Consistency over intensity

A little every day tends to beat occasional bursts of effort. Habits are built by repetition, not by heroics, and small keeps the repetition going.

Be kind to the slip

Missing once isn't failing — getting back to it the next day is the whole skill. The people who keep habits aren't the ones who never slip; they're the ones who return.
