Past Life Readings: What They Are and Aren't

A past life reading is a session exploring themes a practitioner reads as carried over from before this life. It's the most varied of the readings on offer — there's no single standard technique — and the one where it's most worth understanding what you're actually booking.

Why the variation matters

Different practitioners mean different things by it.

Some work astrologically, reading particular points in the natal chart — the lunar nodes most commonly — as describing inherited or carried themes. Some work outside astrology altogether, through guided recollection or regression. Some treat it as frankly symbolic: a way of talking about patterns that feel older than your own biography, without claiming literal previous lives.

These are quite different activities. Ask which one you're getting.

Note for Miriam: this section describes the range rather than your method. Please describe how you actually approach past life readings — what you work from, what a session involves, and whether you present it literally or symbolically — and this becomes accurate to your practice.

What people bring to one

Usually a pattern that doesn't seem to have an origin.

A fear with no event behind it. A relationship dynamic that repeats across different people. A pull toward a place, a period or a kind of work that doesn't trace to anything in their own history. A sense of carrying something that doesn't feel like theirs.

That's the common thread: something that feels older or larger than the life they can account for.

What a session involves

Typically an hour, typically conversational. The practitioner describes what they read, and you respond — recognising something, or not.

There's no physical component to an astrologically-based reading; it's interpretation and discussion.

The honest framing

There's no evidence for past lives, and none for any mechanism by which one would be legible in a birth chart. This is a belief-based and interpretive practice, and the only honest way to present it is as one.

It's also, for many people, a way of working with material that's hard to approach directly. A pattern described as ancient can be easier to look at than the same pattern described as yours — which is a real psychological effect that doesn't require the framing to be literally true.

Where it's the wrong place to go

If what's underneath is trauma, abuse, grief that hasn't moved, or anything following a frightening event, that belongs with a licensed therapist. There are established treatments for those things and this is not among them.

A practitioner who takes on that material, or who encourages you to interpret recovered content as factual memory, is working outside what they can responsibly do. Recovered memory is genuinely contested territory and worth real caution.

Being a careful consumer

Ask what the method is, whether they treat it literally or symbolically, and what they do if something distressing comes up.

Be wary of readings that explain a current relationship as karmic obligation, or that tell you someone in your life owes you something from before. That's the shape this practice takes when it goes wrong, and it can do real damage to how someone understands a present-day situation.
