When people are exhausted, the instinctive move is to push harder — a demanding class, a new regime, something that feels like taking it seriously. For burnout, that's usually the wrong direction, and the practices that help tend to look almost disappointingly mild.
What burnout does to the appetite for exercise
Burnout isn't ordinary tiredness. It's depletion that sleep doesn't resolve, often alongside a sense of being wired and unable to settle at the same time.
In that state a vigorous class can feel like one more demand — another thing to perform, another place to fall short. People in burnout frequently stop exercising altogether, not from laziness but because everything has become an obligation.
Why gentle practice is different
Slow, undemanding movement asks almost nothing of you. There's no sequence to keep up with, no comparison, no sense of being behind.
What people commonly report from gentle practice is less about the body than the attention — an hour where nothing is being achieved, which is unfamiliar if the problem was never stopping.
What it won't fix
Burnout usually has causes that a practice can't touch. If the workload is impossible, the manager is unreasonable, or there's no recovery built into your week, no amount of gentle movement resolves that. It makes the state more bearable while the actual situation is addressed.
Pretending otherwise would be dishonest, and anyone selling yoga as a cure for an untenable job is selling something.
What's reasonable to expect
Many people find regular gentle movement helps with sleep, physical tension and the sense of being permanently braced. That's worth having, and it's also not the same as recovery.
The practical shape of it
Short and frequent beats long and occasional, especially at first. Twenty minutes several times a week is more sustainable than a weekly ninety-minute class you start dreading.
Evening practice suits many people in burnout, because the difficulty is often switching off rather than starting up.
And a class with another person — even online — removes the decision. When depleted, the hardest part is beginning, and a scheduled time with someone expecting you solves that better than willpower does.
If it's not shifting
Persistent exhaustion that doesn't respond to rest and change deserves a doctor's attention. There are medical causes of fatigue that are common and treatable, and guessing isn't the move.
